He participated in the construction of the University of Ljubljana and was also its rector. Above all, together with numerous priests from Prlekija and Prekmurje, he advocated that Prekmurje would join the mother nation. Dr. Namely, in 1919, Matija Slavič attended a peace conference in Paris, where in a scientific debate he justified the request for the annexation of Prekmurje to his motherland, which also came to fruition on 19 August 1919. Years ago, in the center of Križevci, a bust was erected at the parish church and in the chapel of St. Ane set up a memorial room.
